Press Release – Berkshire HorseWorks,Inc. Launches Ranch Life 101 and Ranch Life for Families this Spring – Programs to Run Year Round!

Celebrate Your Inner Cowboy/Cowgirl Through Experiential Programs Rooted in Life Skills Development.

Berkshire HorseWorks, Inc., a 501C3 mission-driven #nonprofit, which offers Eagala Model #equineassistedactivities and life skills programming for the whole family, will be launching #RanchLife101 this Spring and will now be offering it year round. The news was announced today by Hayley Sumner, Founder and Executive Director of #BerkshireHorseWorks. Structured for all ages and abilities, #RanchLife101 is a unique opportunity to learn and play side by side with the beautiful therapy herd of horses and donkeys. #Lifeskilldevelopment is woven throughout all activities, such as how to read nonverbal cues, cultivate empathy, or build healthy relationships all in the calming presence of horses while clearing trails, doing arts and crafts, cleaning the paddocks or working in the organic garden.

The authentic ranch experience will be offered both as two-hour sessions for $225/person or Half-Day morning or afternoon sessions ( 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) for $395/person. All sessions are by appointment only. Snacks will be included during Half-Day bookings. All proceeds from this programming go directly towards the purchase of hay and medicine for the horses, as well as community programs for those at risk.

#RanchLife101, where each day presents a variety of ranch experiences in which to participate, is also now available for families. #RanchLifeforFamilies (RLF) is specifically designed as a fun, outdoor way to reconnect families in nature, all in the presence of horses. Patterned after #familyvolunteering vacations where parents, siblings and other members can give back as they learn, work and play side by side for a common cause, RLF welcomes visitors who may be considering their own hobby farm but would like to gain hands-on experience before hopping in! #RanchLifeforFamilies is offered in two- hour sessions for $475 and in Half-Day programs for $695 for up to eight people.Through these family programs, #BerkshireHorseWorks gains a hands-on workforce which allows the #nonprofit to continue providing equine assisted psychotherapy and therapeutic programs for those at risk in the #community.

“We piloted #RanchLife101 last summer and witnessed organic connections being made where older children mentored the others during the day. Participants as young as four felt valued and #empowered as they worked and played with older children. Relationships and skills that were cultivated all through the interaction with horses was just beautiful and life-changing. We knew we had to try to expand. #Familyvolunteering is what really kept us afloat throughout the winter months and families were able to come together and stay active during these isolating times,”

#BerkshireHorseWorks is a safe and positive environment, where kids can still be kids, but have the opportunities to learn exciting new skills that will contribute to making them more #confident, self-sufficient, and better able to cope with new situations. #RanchLife101 at #BerkshireHorseWorks will lay down roots of resiliency in a fun-filled, activity-packed day at the ranch.

Both programs will be held on a seven- acre ranch with hiking trails, multiple outdoor paddocks, a vernal spring and sun patio, organic garden, walking meditation trails and quiet reading hamlets. Individual, multi-child and family experiences available!

CALLING ALL SINGLES: POST-VALENTINE’S DAY MIXER

Mingle With Others And Horses As You Figure Out What You Really Want In A Mate –

Wine And Cheese To Follow, Win a Romantic Dinner

Richmond, MA – January 26, 2016 Yet another Valentine’s Day is approaching and you’re still single? Don’t get the Valentine’s Blues, come to the barn for an equine assisted session and let the horses help you navigate the dating process. Horses don’t lie. Join other local singles just to have fun and figure out what it is they really want in a mate and what they have to offer. What attracts you to others? What draws them to you? Do opposites really attract? Independent women, are you honestly looking for someone equally independent or someone of whom youd like to takt care?  What bothers you most about potential partners? What are your pet peeves: chewing loudly, annoying laughter, or egocentrism? What traits do you possess that may be on someone else’s list? Berkshire HorseWorks and its herd will provide an environment to figure out what you really want. On Thursday, February 16th at the Berkshire Equestrian Center (40 Perry’s Peak Road, Richmond) from 5:00 – 7:30 PM. Arena time 5:30-7:00 PM and brief wine and cheese before and after.

Whether your experience with horses stops at the viewing of Black Beauty or if you’re a seasoned equine trainer, this evening is for you! Through role paying activities in the presence of horses, you will explore and discover what it is that really draws you to someone – sensually, sexually, physically, and intellectually. Feel free from judgment and develop an organic connection in which there is no right or wrong answer. Horses serve as mirrors of emotions and have the unique ability to ‘call out’ any incongruities between what one is saying and doing. When you say ‘yes’, do you really mean no?  What does your body language convey? The horses will tell you. Through the powerful interaction with horses in ground-based activities, participants will be able to not only work through potentially awkward situations but also learn more about oneself and other local singles. To soften the edges, there will be a brief wine and cheese before and immediately following arena time. Come play.

DO HORSES HAVE A PLACE IN POLITICS?

Berkshire HorseWorks Hosts Equine Assisted Workshop To Help Voters Of All Generations Work Through Frustrations, Fears And Positions During Role Playing Activities With Horses

Richmond, MA – Somewhere in between the mule and the elephant is the horse. Berkshire HorseWorks, Inc. ™ a 501(C)3 will be holding a half day workshop utilizing the EAGALA Model of Equine Assisted Learning to help constituents of all ages vent frustrations, and share and navigate issues facing  the candidates in the 2016 Presidential race on Saturday, March 19th from 11AM – 2 PM  at the Berkshire Equestrian Center (40 Perry’s Peak Rd Richmond, MA 01254). Registration is $65.  The three hour workshop will be held following Super Tuesday, a time when passions are high, issues are at the forefront, and fears are intense.  Whether Democrat or Republican, and whether the topics important to you are the economy, Isis, or climate change, this workshop will allow you to work with people of disparate views in a safe environment and in a unique format. What does safe look like? What resources and vulnerabilities do we bring to the election and what traits do people see in each horse that resemble their candidate? Through the powerful interaction with horses in ground-based activities, participants will have to work across the aisle to overcome their differences and construct a better America.

The workshop will consist of three segments:

The first phase will focus on expressing feelings.  Through the use of props, participants will draw on their own creativity to build physical manifestations of their positions while horses run free in the arena. During the exercises, how will the horses be integrated? Are the horses the candidates or the emotions? Are they stubborn or can they evolve? How do the voters approach the concept of trust? Will the intractable 1,398 pound blue-eyed paint become Trump? Will the diminutive brown pony invoke thoughts of Rubio? Or will the 18-hand looming thoroughbred conjure personality traits of Clinton?

The second segment will include role playing the electoral process. Who is blind to the obstacles in the path to universal healthcare? And who will literally be blind-folded to navigate and resolve the issues surrounding passage while having to trust input from others? Will the four-legged Bernie be labeled the largest obstacle to maintaining Obamacare?

The last segment will call for participants to work together to create a metaphorical build of the America of the future. Will they choose a Bible to represent faith in their build? Will Ted Cruz be included in the new America? How will the constituents transition four-legged beings into new spaces if they aren’t even wearing halters? Where does Kasich fit in?

The EAGALA Model of Equine Assisted Learning and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, practiced by 4,500 certified professionals in 50 countries has a diverse application — from mitigating the effects of child trafficking in Mexico to exploring the grief in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shooting to building cohesion in the workplace — and now as a platform for political discourse.

“I’ve had so many conversations with friends about our vulnerabilities and stress surrounding this election, whether in person or through social media. Some throw plates at spouses while others mindlessly walk dogs miles to escape the rhetoric of the debates. Our team at Berkshire HorseWorks was trying to find a way to utilize The Model as a way to give people an outlet to navigate the political process in a fun and challenging way.  By creating a collective think tank filled with contrasting views in the presence of horses, constituents will be able to share knowledge and resources and hopefully by the end of the day, have a more complete understanding of each other and the issues at hand,” stated Hayley Sumner, Founder and Executive Director.

Experiential, solution-oriented and rooted in evidence-based practices, EAGALA sessions are each facilitated by a Licensed Mental Health Professional and qualified Equine Specialist, both certified in The Model.

Space is limited to 60 participants. To reserve your tickets today, please register by clicking this link, email Hayley@BerkshireHorseWorks.com, or call (413) 698-3700.

BERKSHIRE HORSEWORKS™ INC. SECURES FIRST GRANTS AS 501(C)3 FROM BERKSHIRE BANK, WARNER FUND AND ANONYMOUS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New funds enable nonprofit to expand programming servicing at-risk youth, veterans and families

Richmond, MA – Berkshire HorseWorks which utilizes EAGALA Model Equine Assisted Learning and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, has secured, since receiving its 501(C)3 designation, its first three grants, some of the most respected and innovative funders including Berkshire Bank Foundation, the Warner Fund in New York and an international organization which prefers to remain anonymous, it was announced today by Hayley Sumner, Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit. Since opening its doors, Berkshire HorseWorks has served nearly 200 at-risk youth, veterans, families, couples, and individuals in need.

In line with the Berkshire Bank Foundation’s mission of helping to create healthy, vibrant, sustainable communities where educational and economic opportunities are available for everyone, Berkshire HorseWorks will devise an eight week Life Skills Program for local students from the Berkshire Regional and Pittsfield School Districts who because of financial constraints would not otherwise have access to this support. These students have a range of mental and behavioral challenges including ADHD, autism, sexual abuse, addiction, learning disorders, trauma, domestic violence, and depression. The key goals of the program are to: develop and explore emotional self-awareness through the use of perception; identify how problems are viewed and what strengths overcome challenges; explore differences and create tolerance in our lives; and finally, to explore observations and perceptions and their affect on group dynamics.

“I saw great synergism between our mission and that of Berkshire HorseWorks. They are truly committed to educating our community’s youth in a sensitive, different and thought-provoking way. We are happy to be able to support this program.” Stated Lori Gazzillo, Vice President and Foundation Director of Berkshire Bank. “As a new nonprofit, we are incredibly lucky to have these foundations behind us. We can’t thank them enough,” said Sumner. “It was challenging the first year as we were self-funded and did not anticipate the magnitude of the need in the community for this type of work. Horses facilitate change and we see it every single day. It’s magical.”

The Warner Fund’s mission is to support programs which benefit children with disabilities and children in foster care in innovative ways. Their commitment will facilitate numerous Berkshire HorseWorks programs targeting this population including Bully Intervention/Prevention, Girls Rule!, Sister Sense, and Team Effectiveness. Executive Director, Michael D. Stalonas and the Board of Directors of The Warner Fund have been committed to providing grants for hands on service programs, advocacy and research which help children to achieve their full potential.

Berkshire HorseWorks™, a 501(C)3 nonprofit corporation, is part of the international EAGALA network of 4,500 certified professionals in 50 countries providing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) to at-risk youth, veterans, active duty, their families and corporations. EAL incorporates Equine Assisted Team building by partnering with school districts, local businesses, and international corporations to enhance personal development and reinforce group dynamics in the workplace. Services are offered seven days a week during individual sessions, workshops and wellness retreats. Through the power of horses, Berkshire HorseWorks™ provides the tools to cope, challenge, communicate, heal, lead, empathize and thrive in today’s world.

Hayley Sumner, Founder and Executive Director, first launched the organization in 2013 as a for profit entity. Since its inception, BHW has been treating at-risk youth, veterans, families, individuals, and couples with a broad range of challenges including anxiety, PTSD, bullying, and eating disorders. BHW, in sessions with clients, uses rescue horses that are either retired from racing, injured, traumatized, or otherwise handicapped. In addition, BHW partners with local and national organizations to strengthen their workforces through team building and personal wellness initiatives. Clients have included Hillcrest Educational Center, Pittsfield Juvenile Resource Center, The John Dewey Academy, Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office, Darrow School, Berkshire Functional Fitness, ARK Media, and Fox Sports Network, among others.

The statistics are compelling;

  • 15% of high school seniors nationwide have reported non-medical use of prescription drugs in the past year. (National Institute on Drug Abuse)
  • In Berkshire County 60% of high school seniors have reported the abuse of alcohol, while a reported 35% have abused marijuana in the past year, (Berkshire United Way).
  • Post Traumatic Stress afflicts one-quarter of the troops returning from the Middle East, or about 300,000 men and women, (The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs).
  • At least 22 veterans commit suicide each day, (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs).
  • One in three businesses fail within their first year. The team building exercise creates cohesiveness, (Twomey and Kleiner, 1996).

“I am a cancer survivor and horse lover.  I have witnessed the pervasiveness and potentially life threatening impact of drug use, depression, and PTSD in this community.  This is what drove me to start this venture. While financially challenging, I felt I had no choice. We work with disconnected families, traumatized adolescents, and brave soldiers as they reintegrate into family life, the workplace and the community when they return from deployment. Their ability to pay for these services is irrelevant,” reports Sumner.

Army Sgt. Robert Shove, a veteran of Iraq/Afghanistan stated, “This program has made me whole, like there is hope. I have been through many types of therapy, as I suffer from TBI and PTSD. This was the first time out of any other therapy that it seemed to work. I recommend it for any veteran or military person who has gone through combat or who is suffering from trauma. The connection that I got with the other vets and the horses in the program saved me.”

Sessions take place on the ground (no riding), are facilitated by both a Licensed Mental Health Professional and a qualified Equine Specialist, are solution-focused and follow a stringent code of ethics.  BHW has been practicing this model in the Berkshires for over a year, and with its newly designated nonprofit status, has gained the ability to reach a broader demographic through fundraising and grant initiatives, including tax-deductible donations.

According to Robert Goodman, a father whose family of five engaged in a team building session, “The kids have not stopped talking about it; BHW made us feel very close to each other. My wife, a psychologist, is convinced that EAGALA is such a helpful tool.”

The utilization of rescue horses, some of which are “cribbers” who get high from chewing wood, is highly effective in metaphorical learning with clients who have eating disorders, addiction, PTSD, and more.

BHW is located in a bucolic 27 acre compound in Richmond, MA comprising the Berkshire Equestrian Center, hiking trails, outdoor paddocks, historic barns, state of the art jumping facilities, the Inn at Richmond, and a wellness center. The facility has the flexibility to provide corporate retreats for businesses that invest in their employees through programs focused on teamwork, problem-solving, cultural diversity, empathy, and productivity. Berkshire HorseWorks™ team building sessions take participants out of their offices and into the arena with equines. By incorporating horses into team building workshops, employees are afforded the opportunity to engage in innovative thinking and gain insight into the dynamics of their group.

Dom Sacco, EAGALA certified Mental Health Professional and lead adjustment counselor at Monument Mountain Middle School states, “The facility offers a high degree of flexibility, making it conducive for clients to explore their management styles while at the same time, creating an intimate setting for individual work.”

Despite the high costs of the team approach mandated by The Model, lease fees (for the facility), and general costs of horse ownership, BHW has always offered services on a sliding scale to those most in need. With the newly designated nonprofit status, funds raised by the 501(C)3 could soften that impact.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BERKSHIRE HORSEWORKS TO ENCOURAGE LOCAL BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, AGENCIES TO TEAM BUILD WITH HORSES AT INTERACTIVE DEMO TUESDAY, APRIL 22 AT BERKSHIRE EQUESTRIAN CENTER

FOR EACH ORGANIZATION WHICH “PONIES UP” FOR STAFF DEVELOPMENT BERKSHIRE HORSEWORKS WILL DONATE AN EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSION TO AN AT RISK YOUTH AND FAMILY IN THE COMMUNITY

Richmond, MA, APRIL 14, 2014— In an effort to further support community at risk youth and their families by providing EAGALA Model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Berkshire HorseWorks is reaching out to local organizations to invest in their own staff’s development by signing up for a half or full day team building workshop by June 1st. In turn, BHW will donate sessions to identified at risk youth and/or their families free of charge. The initiative will formally be announced at an interactive demonstration on Tuesday, April 22nd, from 4:30 – 7pm at the Berkshire Equestrian Center in Richmond (40 Perry’s Peak Road, off route 41). The demo will focus on personal development and team dynamics in the workplace and how EAP can be a highly effective tool for corporate team building. Egremont resident, cancer survivor and EAGALA Certified Practitioner Hayley Sumner introduced this experiential modality of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Learning (EAL) to the Berkshires last June when she and her team opened shop.

The Model has a diverse application from helping in the healing process of the children, families and first responders affected by the Newtown tragedy, to assisting military personnel and vets with PTSD reintegrate into society, to cultivating empathy in Fortune 500 companies, to motivating a corporation’s sales force to teaching anti-bullying techniques in schools.

“My hope when starting this business was to be able to help organizations and our community concurrently. If we can offer a new way for businesses to invest in their workforce by using horses to honestly examine team dynamics, facilitate effective communication, increase problem solving skills and encourage creative thinking then that will lead to more productive and healthier relationships outside of the workplace,” said Sumner, Founder and Executive Director of Berkshire HorseWorks.

Clients have ranged from Fox Sports, Berkshire Functional Fitness and the Seekonk Tree Company to Hillcrest Educational Center, John Dewey Academy and the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Department. Because Equine Assisted Learning is so effective, it is considered a rapid approach to building life skills.

“I attended a recent team building session and had no idea what to expect. After just an hour and a half I came away with valuable information usable in everyday life. First and foremost, I don’t listen very well!! I hear fine but don’t focus on what is being said. Where I didn’t comprehend the initial instructions others did. So as a team, being able to combine all of our individual strengths and solve the task was powerful and more efficient. I highly recommend taking a session,” said Peter Sweet, Jr., Owner Seekonk Tree Farm.

“The HorseWorks experience awoke me to the realization that I am so intimidated by instructions issued by an “authority figure” that I will blindly follow those instructions to the letter, as if I were still the “good little girl” who never challenged the expected response. To have reacted this way at this time flew directly in the face of who I am today … an individual who explores every possible means to an end, extended to very out-of-the-box solutions. As a result, I am determined to diminish my tendency to demur without significant, informed thought and, instead, act on my proven ability to intelligently question and act beyond the expected, even at the risk of being “wrong”, shared Carol Robins, Former Director of Volunteer Resources, Lighthouse International.

Horses are innately sensitive and open. Interaction with them serves as a mirror of emotions and behavior, thus helping individuals, couples, and groups discover positive solutions to real-life challenges. Participants are empowered by the lessons learned in the arena and translate that energy, attitude, and behavior when they return to the workplace, the family or school. Recent group workshops have included:

  • Defining how employees can work as a team toward a common goal such as increased productivity or landing a new client.
  • Working with staff to enhance communication and adapt to a company’s new management initiatives.
  • Helping struggling students deal with bullying at school or issues at home.
  • Navigating cultural differences in a government agency.

Having run a public relations company for more than 20 years, Sumner recognized the importance of investing in and supporting her associates in their personal development. “We would go on rafting trips to Costa Rica to help us all develop a sense of trust and teamwork. They became great leaders and listeners. Had I known about horses at that time I might have traded in the rafts for hooves. We can work on just about anything in the arena that one would do in boardroom trainings. Bringing it to life allows for hands on metaphorical learning that is very powerful for staff development employee retention and overall wellness,” states Sumner.

Unlike therapeutic riding where a client is mounted on a horse, EAGALA Model EAP and EAL sessions take place on the ground, are facilitated by both a Licensed Mental Health Professional and a qualified Equine Specialist, are solution-oriented. Horse therapy or EAP can be used as both an adjunct or alternative to talk therapy. Horses often break through the barriers that in more traditional modes can stall people. EAGALA Certified professionals work with a broad spectrum of behavioral/mental health issues and learning goals including ADHD, autism, depression, addiction, eating disorders, couples therapy, stress management, recidivism, teamwork, sexual abuse, leadership skills and trauma-related disorders. Donated sessions to the families and youth will focus on these treatment goals as needed.

“The Berkshires are a very healing community. I am hoping the EAGALA programs at Berkshire HorseWorks will augment in a new way, the wellness and vitality of our population both individually and in the workplace – arming all with the tools to cope, heal, compete, communicate and thrive in today’s stressful world. BHW will offer not only EAP and EAL sessions for individuals, couples, veterans, and groups, but also tailored workshops and retreats for corporations, agencies, and school districts. The goal is to collaborate with existing initiatives so as to maximize impact and reach,” explained Sumner.
