Art Journaling leverages the calming presence of equine friends to enhance the connection to creativity and self-expression. This environment is safe and non-judgmental, allowing for self exploration. Students are introduced to a theme, a technique and artistic works within the theme; then are given the opportunity to ideate, dream, commune with the horses and create in their journals at their own pace.
Horse Powered Reading is based on experiential learning for individuals, siblings, or groups. Powering through challenges, Horse Powered Reading® focuses on the learning process for the individual and builds
upon children’s natural curiosity and determination.
● Students are free to experiment with knowledge firsthand
● Interaction between client and horse gives the facilitator insight into what the client is experiencing inside and what patterns are working or not working for them
● Through this process, the horse creates an opportunity for immediate feedback and experiential learning to take place
How does a horse teach reading?
During a Horse Powered Reading session, the horse becomes the reading material or "book" with which the student needs to connect.
Without finding and making some connection with the text, it is easy to drift away from or lose interest in a book. The horse becomes a metaphor for that connection.
Research has discovered it only takes a few key reading skills combined with motivation, self-efficacy/confidence, and persistence, all of which are taught by the horses, to create exponential growth in learning.
Berkshire HorseWorks’ Life Skills program utilizes Eagala Model Equine Assisted Learning practiced in 50 countries by over 4,500 professionals to increase self-confidence, foster creative thinking, encourage problem-solving, nurture empowerment, explore effective communication, enhance time management techniques, develop healthy boundaries, strengthen self-care skills, cultivate mutual respect, and provide a safe environment to have fun and build friendships.
This eight week program decreases academic truancy, teen pregnancy, and juvenile delinquency and provides students of all ages tools to work through any obstacle that presents itself as well as to cultivate social skills, thereby thriving in school, at home and in the community. The time spent with the horses in the arena can be either a standalone program or a complement to an existing Life Skills initiative in the district.
The designated group will meet each week for 90 minutes. During these sessions, activities are constructed which support program goals and incorporate processing, and when appropriate, journaling, art and music. Rooted in evidence-based practices, this experiential modality has been found to be effective and incorporates metaphorical learning. The key goals of the program are: to develop and explore emotional self-awareness through the use of perception; to identify how problems are viewed and what strengths can be utilized to overcome challenges; to look at differences and how to create tolerance in our lives; and finally to explore observations and perceptions and how they affect group dynamics.
