In Berkshire County, an estimated 3,400 people aged 65+ live with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Alzheimer’s, dementia, and related neurological conditions are often called the “silent killers of the soul,” quietly eroding memory, independence, and the spark of everyday living. Each moment of inactivity or seclusion allows skills and confidence to slip away, making early intervention and engagement critical. Many individuals with these conditions struggle in silence, facing daily challenges with memory, communication, and independence that often go unnoticed. The data underscores the need for programs which support cognitive, emotional, and physical wellness for this population.
The Equine / Elders Connection (EEC) is a new Eagala-based program created to support these individuals, along with their caregivers, through strength-based, hands-on activities with rescued horses, ponies, and donkeys. The program aims to maintain and improve daily functioning, reduce isolation, build confidence, and provide caregiver support through a safe, structured, multi-sensory environment. Participants will engage directly with horses through activities such as grooming, animal care, leading, observing their behavior, and interactive structured exercises that promote memory, nonverbal communication, calming sensory input, mindfulness, manual dexterity, self-care skills, emotional connection, social engagement, and overall wellbeing.
